Proven Success: Grade Improvement and Higher Test Scores

After decades of teaching and tutoring, I have continually seen my students improve their grades in school and raise their scores on standardized tests, such as the SAT and ACT.  I teach them about reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and study skills -- all important tools for success in school and eventually in the workplace.

I have been tutoring students in English since then, working on classroom studies, remedial work, enrichment, SAT and ACT preparation, and college essays.  I have a Masters Degree in English from Middlebury College in Vermont, and I spent one term of graduate school studying at Oxford University in England.  I am certified as an English teacher and I have professional experience as an editor.

Simply put...

For the SAT's and ACT's, I teach to the test; clearly, the goal is to understand the material and get as high a score as possible.  I work with students on test taking strategies, grammar, word choice (usage), vocabulary, critical reading skills, and analytic writing (which is required for the current essay).

Different Students
Require Different
Approaches to Learning

One of the greatest things about tutoring a student one-on-one is that I can find her individual learning style and meet her exactly where she is in her knowledge. A child might be coping with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADD, and/or ADHD.  With or without these learning challenges, she might be talented and gifted.  I am accustomed to addressing all of these situations.  I can help the child to learn relatively quickly and efficiently, and as a result, her confidence usually grows.

Teaching in the classroom has limitations, as the knowledge, learning styles, and interests of a diverse group of students must be addressed. With tutoring, I devote my full attention to one student at a time. I find that with so much concentration on the individual and the material, each student thrives.

Take the Stress out of

the College Application Essay

The college application essay might be a mystery to students completing their first applications, but actually, there is a formula to it.  Colleges look for content that highlights the qualities of the applicant in a "show don't tell" style.  Colleges want excellent writing that has a level of formality that is neither full of fluff nor completely conversational.  I help the student to choose an appealing topic, to brainstorm ideas, and to structure the essay.  I answer questions as the student writes, and when he is finished the first draft, I help him edit the essay by pointing out areas to improve and by teaching him why and how to improve those areas.  As a result, the student can showcase his best writing.

— Maureen from Skillman, NJ

Ms. Fay is an incredible tutor. Not only did she help my son improve his reading, writing and communications skills for high school, she took the time to tailor his plan to his needs as a dyslexic student. Diane was flexible in meeting his busy schedule and always available by email or telephone to help him in any situation. His SAT reading and writing scores improved under her guidance. She also helped us through the intimidating college application process. After working with Diane to complete the Common Application questions and essay, my son was accepted to William Paterson University. I am forever grateful for her help, and I highly recommend her to anyone who needs tutoring or college advice.

Diane gently guided and encouraged my boys to use their voices to write meaningful essays depicting the 'real person' behind the college application.  The excitement on their faces and the look of accomplishment in their eyes after the essays were completed were priceless.  In addition, Diane tailored her ACT and SAT instruction based on their strengths and weaknesses.  As my sons learned appropriate test taking strategies and practiced the skills consistently, their confidence levels  soared.   It was a relief to know that with Diane’s professional help, I could relax and count on her to work with my kids to get the job done.
